Obituary of Thomas David McGovern

Thomas David McGovern’s gentle spirit was freed in grace and peace from Bobby’s Hospice early morning August 2 2014. He laughed and shared his love to the very end; living fully until he could no more; departing fearlessly when finally called; surrounded by wife and best friend Shirley, his children, his art, and the spirit of his ancestry. Lab Technician by trade (Irving Oil Refinery), he graciously passed the white coat to others, and eagerly embraced the carver’s knife and artist’s palate, from which many (family, friend and strangers) were beneficiary to his wonderful artistic gifts. As with family, the art he loved surrounded him until the end. Epitome of a gentleman, Tom gave what he could and it was always his best. He disparaged none. He was thankful for all he had, and he unfailingly showed it to his family, friends, and to his God. He refused none in need, and gave often in silence. Many he helped will never know the better. He made wine for many years, and delighted in sharing a glass of robust red with any who would partake. With wine came inevitable stories which he delighted in telling; literally to the very end; keeping alive for the next generation stories of those long gone before him. He honoured his mother Florence and father Bernard till he could speak no more; and even then, his acrylic rendition of his youthful mother watched over his bed as he breathed his last. To the end, he espoused with vigour the need to protect this earth that sustains us; to equally love and respect the dignity of all life; and the absolute supremacy of peace as master over the senselessness of violence. He understood that without ancestors, the gift of life could not endure. He thanked them through his love of history and appreciation of all family, regardless the century of their birth. Gone before him were siblings Mary (Jim) and Connie (Cig); big brothers Bernie and Joe, and granddaughter Erin. Mother in law Ethel DeBow, and in-laws Betty and Doug DeBow, Bert Hughes, Edna McGovern, as well as Patsy and Charlie Williston and their boy David now share his company. Brother Jim, sisters in law Val and Mary remain to celebrate the life of their amazing brother. But by far the emerald of his Irish eye was his best friend Shirley (DeBow) who was his loving wife and unflinching companion of 60 years. His unwavering guidance and friendship was gratefully prized by children and their partners Pat, Judy and Mikki, Mark and Roland, John and Bev, and Ethel and Tom. He was beloved by grandchildren Melissa, Carrie, Tommy, Lauren, Julia, Patrick, Jillian and great grandchildren Jayden and Riley. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, 634-7424, visitation is Tuesday August 5 from 2:00 to 8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at his beloved Stella Maris Parish at 12:00 pm. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, after which a reception will be held in the church hall. Remembrances to Bobby’s Hospice or the Cathedral Restoration Fund would be appreciated by the family. Please place online condolences and remembrances at www.BrenansFH.com.
