Obituary of Robert Blyth Hurst

On Monday, August 11, 2014, Robert (Bob) Blyth Hurst died unexpectedly in his home. Bob is survived by his wife Joan (Foster) Hurst and his in-laws Gary & Keltie, David & Susan, Douglas, Linda & Cheryl and nieces and nephews Michael & Stephanie, Angela & Luke, John, David and Jane. Bob was born in Gatehead, England in 1944, to Blyth and Doris Hurst and was proud of his Geordie heritage. He was a Fellow of the Institute of British Engineering. He was a mechanical engineer and specialized in the installation and maintenance of earth station and microwave projects. His work entailed travelling to the Middle East, Hong Kong and many remote islands in the Caribbean, Indian and Pacific Oceans, including the Cook Islands where Bob and Joan met in 1980. Bob served with the British Parachute Regiment and SAS before becoming a mechanical engineer and continued as a reservist for many years. He first worked as an installation engineer with the Marconi Company and later with Cable & Wireless. He retired in 2000 and continued to work as a consultant. Bob was an accomplished scuba diver and certified instructor. An avid football fan, he was a passionate supporter of Newcastle United. He loved being with people on the golf course at Westfield, at the family camp, or raising a glass at the local pub. Bob will be missed by his many friends around the world. To celebrate Bob's life, all are invited to join the family at a reception at Westfield Golf & Country Club on Friday, August 15, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.
