Obituary of Donald Malcolm Chamberlain

Don said goodbye to his family and friends on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at the Loch Lomond Villa. Born on May 8, 1921 in Quispamsis, he was the son of the late Joseph and Jennie (Saunders) Chamberlain. He leaves his loving wife of seventy-two years, Elise (Haworth) Chamberlain; two precious daughters, Elaine Buckley (John) and Sharon Brown (Dale); as well as grandsons, Jason, Chris, Matt and Mike Inness. Don enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1939 and saw service in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea and off the coast of France during the D-Day landing. After leaving the service, he went on to serve thirty-nine years with the Department of Veterans Affairs where he assisted hundreds of veterans with their rehabilitation. He was a spiritual man and was one of the founding members of St. James Anglican Church Lakewood where he and his wife enjoyed many years as members of the Couples Club and the Silver Links Seniors Club. In good times, Don enjoyed the outdoor life and especially loved hunting and fishing with family and friends. He also enjoyed telling and stretching old stories, which all the boys had heard many times. Don always loved to work away at his camp on Bellisle Bay with a lot of family members present. Don was one of nine children and is survived by three sisters, Carol Butler, Betty Saltzman and Ruth Whipple. He was predeceased by two sisters, Doris Richards and Willa Pollack along with his three brothers, Bob, Joe and Ossie Chamberlain. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A Royal Canadian Legion Tribute to a Veteran Service will be held Wednesday at 7:30 PM. The funeral service will be held from St. James Anglican Church Lakewood, 2000 Loch Lomond Road, Saint John on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at 11:00 AM. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances made to St. James Anglican Church Lakewood or to a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
