Obituary of Gertrude Evelyn Smith

The death of Evie Smith of Rothesay occurred peacefully on Friday, November 15, 2013, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Truro, NS on July 10, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Bessie (Elliott) Buchanan. Evie always took great pleasure in the company of her family and friends. She was an excellent cook and her famous apple pies and cinnamon rolls will be missed dearly. In her younger years, Evie had many travelling adventures. She enjoyed playing bingo, dancing and sewing. She will be sadly missed. Evie is survived by her daughter, Sandi Forster (Dennis) of Rothesay; precious grandchildren, James O’Neill (Carrieanne) of Saint John and Amanda Forster of Miramichi; special great-granddaughter, April O’Neill; sister, Bessie Baldwin (Arthur) of California; caretaker, Grace Murphy; several nieces, nephews, friends and her beloved dog, Cuddles. She was predeceased by her first husband, Henry Arthur Smith; second husband, Garnett Cyril Gunn; sisters, Rachel Blades, Pearl Munson, Minie Ashwood and Ethel Atkinson; as well as brothers, Noble, Robert, Terrance and Frederick. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Monday, November 18, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. The funeral service will be held from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, at 12:30 PM. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. A Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Axillary Tribute service will be held on Monday at 7:00 PM. For those who wish, remembrances made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or to the Saint John SPCA Animal Rescue would be appreciated by the family.
