Obituary of Geoffrey C. Crowe

Retired editorial writer Geoffrey Campion Crowe, formerly of 158 Gibbon Road, East Riverside and most recently of Parkland in the Valley, died on October 23, 2015 at the age of 92. He was the beloved husband of Marjorie (Hoben) Crowe. Geoffrey was born in London, England in 1922 to Sydney C. and Constance (Huntley) Crowe and graduated from St. Dunstan’s College there. At the outbreak of the Second World War he went to work at the Westminster Bank’s Foreign Branch, and part-time as a messenger in the Air Raid Precautions service during the London Blitz of 1940-41. In 1941 he volunteered for the Royal Armoured Corps, serving in the 141st Regiment Crocodile Flamethrowers in England and Northwest Europe. He was wounded and awarded the Military Cross just before the Rhine crossing in 1945. After a few years working for a French firm of importers in London, he came to Saint John to visit friends in 1954, and was hired by the Telegraph-Journal and Evening Times-Globe as a reporter. He moved to the editorial department in 1961, and for more than 25 years wrote editorials and opinion pieces, edited feature stories and handled the letters to the editor column. He retired in 1987. Geoffrey was a past president of the St. George’s Society and the Eclectic Reading Club. Besides his wife of 56 years, he is survived by several nieces, nephews, godchildren and cousins in Canada and England. Although there will be no visitation, relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service, which will be held from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 2:00 PM. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Saint John SPCA Animal Rescue, Salvation Army or the charity of the donor’s choice.
