Obituary of Shirley Leone Cosman

Shirley Cosman of Rothesay, beloved wife of Berton Cosman, died peacefully at her home on September 11, 2015 with her family at her side. Born on August 25, 1928 in Saint John, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Muriel (Purdy) Ellis. Shirley enjoyed life to its fullest - she learned to fly in 1962, completing a required solo cross country flight from Saint John to Moncton to Fredericton, returning to Saint John. Shirley also loved the ocean and spent many happy years on the family boat cruising the Saint John River and the Fundy and Maine coasts. She was an avid reader and accomplished knitter. She loved spending time with family and friends, whom she cherished. Shirley's "unique" sense of humour was enjoyed by all. In addition to her husband of 64 years, Shirley is survived by her children, Dawn McCormack-Craig (Robert) of Halifax, Peggy Cosman (Stewart) of Kingston Peninsula and Michael Cosman (Lauren) of Rothesay; sister, Nancy Brittain of Rothesay; grandchildren, Scott McCormack (Sarah) of LaHave, NS, Michael McCormack (Yolanda) and Robert McCormack of Halifax, NS, Emily Whitfield (Sam) and Katherine May (Sheldon) of Quadra Island, BC, Meaghan Balzer of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Jonathan Cosman and Justin Cosman of Rothesay, NB; her great grandchildren, Ruby McCormack, Jari Keefer, Deo Balzer, Iyanu Balzer and Quinn May, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Marvin Ellis, brother-in-law, John Brittain and son-in-law, David McCormack. The family would like to extend its heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Lisa Sutherland, caregiver Tanya Cole and staff of Kennebecasis Valley Extra Mural for the warmth and thoughtfulness of care given to Shirley during the time of her illness. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visitation on Monday September 14, 2015 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM. The funeral service will be held from Saint David's United Church, Gondola Point Road, Rothesay on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at 11:00 AM. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
