Obituary of Dorothy Mary Olsson

The family wishes to announce the peaceful passing of our mother at her home. In June 1946, a beautiful British War Bride, Dorothy Mary Tucker Olsson, arrived at Pier 21 on the Aquitania to meet the love of her life, Olle Olsson. They were married on December 18th, 1945 in her hometown of Crewe, England. She left behind in England her parents, Harold Tucker and Mary Clement and six brothers, Harold (Bessie), Leslie (Sheila), Norman (Jane, Audrey), Jack (Jessie, Nora), Gerry (Joan), and Peter (Dorothy). Dorothy was the apple of her father's eye and it took great courage and trust in her new husband to set sail to the other side of the world. Here in Canada, Dorothy won over the hearts of Olle's widowed mother, Alma, and his seven siblings: Bertha (John Leadbetter), Anna Lisa (Harry Love), Gunhild, Karin (Howard Urquhart), Stig (Irene), Margareta (Jack Kierstead) and Alma, currently the only surviving sibling (Byron Clouston). Although Dorothy had wanted six red-haired boys, she had to settle for: Karen (John Kennedy), Gregory (Sheryl Raeburn), Ingrid (Steve Rose) and Kristina (Brad Stanley). She was a very proud grandmother of: Geoffrey Olsson (Wendy Solkin) and Jennifer Olsson (Mark Richardson); Alexander and Erik Kennedy; Erica, Elliot and William Rose; Kirsten and Jaryd Stanley. Then just over a year ago became a great-grandmother of Sydney Anne and, as of June 16th, 2012, Jack Williams Richardson. Throughout her life, Dorothy was a big contributor and a supporter of many organizations including: St. James the Less Church, A.C.W. local and provincial chapters, Kennebecasis Branch No. 58 Royal Canadian Legion, Overseas War Brides Association, one of the founding members of the East Riverside Park Committee, a canvasser for March of Dimes, Canadian Cancer Society and Heart and Stroke campaigns and a volunteer for 30 years with Meals on Wheels. Dorothy and Olle were members of the Young Married Couples Club at St. Luke’s Anglican Church and danced with the Beaus and Belles Square Dancing Club. Into her 90’s, she played weekly card games and Latin line danced at the Bill McGuire Community Centre and was a life member of Shari’s yoga group. Dorothy was a loving daughter, sister, wife, aunt, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and also a dear friend to many. With family and friends on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, she traveled extensively to visit them. The funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). There will be a viewing at St. James the Less Church, 1760 Rothesay Road, Rothesay, on Wednesday June 20th, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held at the church on Thursday June 21st at 12 pm, followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment will take place at the family cemetery, Lower Kars. A Royal Canadian Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary Tribute Service will be held on Wednesday at 7:00 PM at the church. If you wish, a donation to one of the following charities would be much appreciated: St. James the Less Church, Red Cross Homecare Support Services, the New Brunswick Extra-Mural Program or a charity of your choice. For further information, please see Brenan's Funeral Homes website: www.BrenansFH.com The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Karen Rombaut for the many years of kind care given to our mother and to the team at New Brunswick Extra-Mural Program for their palliative home health care.
