Obituary of Arthur J. Stanton

Arthur J. Stanton of Saint John, husband of the late Helen T. (Connell) Stanton, passed away peacefully in his 90th year on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Kings Way Care Centre, with his family by his side. Born in Saint John on October 14, 1923, he was a son of the late Sidney and Florence (Coughlan) Stanton. Arthur was a school teacher and a licensed electrician, and taught the Industrial Arts Program in various Saint John area schools for 38 years, retiring in 1982. He also was a projectionist at various theatres, and a member of the Projectionist and Theatrical Stage Employees Union Local 440, and was a familiar voice on local radio, providing the race synopsis from Exhibition Park in the 1970’s. In his spare time, Art enjoyed amateur photography and music, and enjoyed entertaining his family and friends with quips derived from the Readers Digest. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Probus Club. Arthur is survived by his children, Patricia Bates (Edward) of Saint John, Peter Stanton of Saint John, Catherine Brown of Nova Scotia, Philip Stanton (Kelly) of Quispamsis, Christine Christian (James Haughn) of Bedford, NS, and Neil Stanton (Kimberley) of Rothesay; grandchildren Jennifer McLeod (Troy), Alison Robichaud (Laurie), Christopher Bates (Shelley), Jana Brown, Derek Brown, Emma Stanton, Hayley Daniels (Ian), Nathan Christian, Hannah Stanton, and Ryan Stanton; six great grandchildren; sister Mary Eileen Johnson of Saint John; brother-in-law Arthur P. Connell of Saint John; sister-in-law Marjorie Marsten of Saint John; and several nieces and nephews. Arthur was predeceased by a sister, Kathleen Barsalou (Bernard); brothers-in-law Ted Johnson, Edward Connell (Doris), and Kenneth Connell; and by a sister-in-law Dorothea (Connell) Moore (George). Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Sunday, February 10, 2013, from 2-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Peter’s Church, 50 Clarendon Street, Saint John, on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 11:00 AM. A private family interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery in the spring. For those who wish, remembrances to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, or Kings Way Care Centre would be appreciated by the family.
