Obituary of Cora Jane Short

The death of Cora Jane Short, of the Loch Lomond Villa, wife of the late Charles V. Short, occurred on September 28, 2003, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Hampstead, NB, on July 10, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Melbourne T. and Della Maude (Hamilton) Appleby. Mrs. Short operated the Hampstead Telephone Office in her home from 1943 until dial conversation in 1962. She worked at the Saint John General Hospital as Switchboard Operator from 1965 until the closing of the hospital. She was a member of the Central Hampstead Baptist Church. She was a member of the Martello Temple # 25 Pythian Sisters. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by her sons Vernon W. (Ruth) of Amherst, NS, Reginald S. (Beatrice) of Doaktown, NB, Wallace H. (Linda) of Saint John, her daughter Barbara (Richard) Routledge of Doaktown, NB, eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and long time companion Parnell Stack. Besides her husband, her brother Walter T. Appleby and her sisters Dorothy Robertson and Grace Slipp predeceased her. Resting at Brenan's Bay View Select Community Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road (634-7425), with visiting on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Following cremation the funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2003, at 11:00 AM, from Bay View Chapel. A reception will be held at Bay View Funeral Home before proceeding to Central Hampstead Cemetery for interment. Remembrances made to the charity of donor's choice would be appreciated.
