Obituary of BERNARD JOSEPH DUNN

DUNN, BERNARD JOSEPH - Died peacefully November 23, 2006 at his home in Saint John West. Born in 1924 in Saint John, NB, he was the son of the late Hugh and Elisabeth (Gillen) Dunn and husband of the late Bertha (Vautour) Dunn. Bernie spent his early years in Chapel Grove. His work ethic and outgoing way with people led him to jobs dealing with the public. As a very young man he joined Eastern Bakeries and many people knew him as their bread man. Always willing to try something new, he and Charlie Reid opened and co-owned a restaurant in Amherst for a few years. He sold cars working hard to find the right car for people. His last career was in the taxi business. With several partners, he founded and co-owned ABC Taxi and was known as a caring and reliable driver. After retiring he was still always on the go, continuing to enjoy traveling about the city. He loved Saint John and he enjoyed people. He often had a twinkle in his eye; one of his favorite tricks was to whistle like a bird at the Saint John market and watch people look up. Many people knew him as the man who gave out maple candies. He enjoyed making things with wood and was best known for his miniature lighthouses. A dedicated family man, Bernie's proudest achievement late in life was that of grandfather. He was a long time supporter of his church, St. Rose of Lima. He served at mass and was an usher for many years. He will be missed. Bernie is survived by his daughter Lee, her husband Tom and grandson Tim McLean of New Maryland NB; friends and in-laws, Lionel and Yvonne LeBlanc, Alfred and Shirley Vautour and Louis LeMoine, all of Saint John, and many nieces and nephews.
