Obituary of Lawrence D. Hanley

HANLEY-the death of Lawrence D. 'Larry' Hanley of 1 Hedley St., husband of Brenda M. (Jay) Hanley, occurred peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Tuesday, March 7, 2006, surrounded by his family after a period of failing health. Mr. Hanley was born in Saint John on August 22, 1948, a son of Mary E. (Janes) Hanley of Saint John, and the late Lawrence G. Hanley. Throughout his working life Larry was involved in labour relations both with the trade union movement as well as in the industrial workplace. He had been president of his local union (601 Canadian Paperworkers); president of the Saint John and District Labour Council in the late 70's; and president of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour 1981-82. Larry spent many years as a volunteer advocate for injured workers in New Brunswick and served on the Boudreau Commission drafting legislation for N.B. Compensation guidelines. He had served ten years on the City of Saint John Planning Advisory Committee. He also worked as Industrial Relations Specialist of J. D. Irving from 1986-90. Larry enjoyed a strong interest and involvement in politics and was an avid supporter of the New Democratic Party. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by one son Seamus Lawrence (Trudy) of Saint John; one daughter, Lise Sarah Driscoll (Steven) of Rothesay; three beautiful grandchildren, Jay Stewart Driscoll, Ava Claire Driscoll, and Megan Alissa Hanley; one brother, James W. (Jane) of Saint John; his father-in-law, James Jay of Saint John; his sisters-in-law, Sandra Lane (James) of Saint John, and Marilyn Bennett of Vancouver; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., with visiting on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Following a private service, interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Animal Rescue League would be appreciated.
