Obituary of Sister Mary M. Murphy

MURPHY-the death of Sister Mary M. Murphy (Sr. Carmel Marie) of Ruth Ross Residence occurred at her residence on Tuesday, January 6, 2004. Sister was born in Red Bank, a daughter of the late William and Margaret (Doyle) Murphy. She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception on September 8, 1927. Sr. Murphy obtained her Teacher's License in 1929, a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of New Brunswick in 1938 and her Master of Arts Degree at U.N.B. in 1940. Sister taught grade three at St. Joseph's School in Saint John from 1930 to 1937 and then went on to teach grades ten to twelve at St. Vincent's Girls High School from 1937 to 1967. Following her retirement from teaching, Sister Mary worked in the Catechetical Centre at St. Joseph's Convent, Saint John West. She later moved to Vancouver, where she served in the ministries of Pastoral Care and Librarian at St. Vincent's Hospital. In 1992 Sister returned to Saint John. She was pre-deceased by a brother, Eugene Murphy; and five sisters, Frances Donovan, Cecelia Donovan, Florence Foran, Ruth Casey, and Carmel Foran. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Resting at St. Vincent's Convent, 31 Cliff St., with visiting on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Vincent's Convent Chapel on Thursday morning at ten o'clock. Interment will take place in the Sisters of Charity Plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Solemn Vespers will be held on Wednesday evening at seven o'clock.
