Obituary of Sister Elaine M. Toner

The death of Sister Elaine M. Toner (Sr. M. Justine) occurred at Ruth Ross Residence on Sunday, September 14, 2008. Sister was born in Grand Falls, N.B., a daughter of the late William and Grace (Gillespie) Toner. She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception on Dec. 8, 1937. Sister was a teacher by profession and earned her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education Degrees from the University of New Brunswick. She had taught in various place in New Brunswick including Johnville, Moncton, St. Stephen, and Saint John. She was Principal of St. Patrick's School in Digby from 1977-1981. Sister returned to New Brunswick in 1981 and served as Religious Education Co-ordinator at St. Augustine's Parish in Moncton. She later returned to Saint John where she spent many years aw a volunteer at Rocmaura Nursing Home. She was predeceased by a brother, Joyner Toner; and a sister, Mrs. Bernadine McGrath. She is survived by two brothers, Owen Toner(Clarinda) and Clarence Toner, both of Grand Falls; four sisters, Sister Ada Toner, S.C.I.C. of Edmonton, Elizabeth Doak (Ron) of Westbrook, Maine, Ellen Sherman (Ed0 of Fort Fairfield, Maine, and Theresa Stoddard of Fremont, California; and several nieces and nephews. Resting at St. Vincent's Convent, 31 Cliff St., with visiting on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Evening Vigil will be held on Monday evening at seven o'clock. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Vincent's Chapel on Tuesday morning at ten o'clock. Interment will take place in the Sisters of Charity Plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
