Obituary of Sister Christina Schell

SCHELL-the death of Sister Christina Schell (Sr. Mary Annunciata) occurred at Ruth Ross Residence on Wednesday, September 24, 2008. Sister was born in Marienberg, Russia, a daughter of the late Jacob and Elizabeth (Uebel) Schell. She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception on July 18, 1930. Sister Schell earned her First Class Teaching Certificate, a Superior Teaching Certificate, B.A., and M.A. Degree along with a Physical Education Certificate. She taught grades one to twelve in Holdfast, Sask. from 1933-1968. Sister moved to Edmonton in 1968 and continued her career in teaching until 1974 when she retired from teaching. The high school where Sister Schell taught in Holdfast was named "Schell High" in her honour. Sister returned to Saint John in 1974 and resided at St. Vincent's Convent. She was the Co-Ordinator of Religious Education for the students of the high schools in the Saint John area. She was also the Director of the Catholic Bookstore for many years. She continued to be a volunteer in the store for many years. Sister wrote and published the book "Travel, Triumph, and Tragedy", the story of her family's journey from Russia to Canada. She was predeceased by two brothers, Jacob and John Schell; and five sisters, Sister Anna Schell, S.C.I.C., Sister Barbara Schell, S.C.I.C., Sister Margaret Schell, S.C.I.C., Sister Paula Schell, S.C.I.C., and Mrs. Mary Bauer. She is survived by a nephew, Gerry Schell of Calgary; and a niece, Angelika Bauer of Russia. Resting at St. Vincent's Convent, 31 Cliff St., with visiting on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Vincent's Chapel on Friday morning at ten o'clock. Interment will take lace in the Sisters of Charity Plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Prayer Vigil will be held on Thursday evening at seven o'clock.
