Obituary of Rosemary Higgins

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">&nbsp;</span>&nbsp; It is with great sadness we announce Rosemary&rsquo;s passing on December 1, 2012 at her home at 5 Bedell Avenue, Saint John, NB with her family at her side.&nbsp; Born in Saint John, NB, Rosemary was the daughter of the late James and Catherine Keenan.&nbsp; Rosemary is survived by her husband of 53 years, Robert J., her daughter Helen Ann (Jacques) of Boston, three sons, Robert A. (Suzanne) of Boston, M. Leonard (Jean) of Saint John, and J. Andrew (Sylvie) of Halifax, 8 grandchildren and many close nieces and nephews, two brothers Duncan (Theresa), Homer (Maura) and sister Zita of Quebec.&nbsp; She was predeceased by her brother Alexander (Sandy), sister Myrtle, half sister Leona, and half brother James.</p> <p>Rosemary was a very loyal "North Ender".&nbsp; She graduated from St. Vincent&rsquo;s and Rothesay High Schools where she was the Captain of her basketball team.&nbsp; She then graduated from NB Teachers&rsquo; College in Fredericton and taught in NB at local Saint John schools.&nbsp; She worked at CHSJ Radio and Television, and later as her husband&rsquo;s legal secretary.&nbsp; She introduced her family to downhill skiing and later to sailing as a member of the RKYC.&nbsp; She studied navigation which she continued to pursue while joining her husband crossing oceans around the world by freighters as the lone passengers.&nbsp; She studied painting under the late Robert Percival and Ray Butler.&nbsp; Rosemary loved her friends and times on the Long Reach since the early 1960&rsquo;s.&nbsp; She was an avid reader of mystery and classic novels and enjoyed playing the piano alone, and work through the weekend crossword puzzle with her family on Saturday Mornings.</p> <p>Rosemary was Miss Canada 1960 and a top finalist in the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.&nbsp; Rosemary was privately voted "Best Friend" by her fellow Pageant contestants.</p> <p>Rosemary and her family wish to thank Dr. M. Simon and staff; Doctors, Nurses and all staff of Oncology at SJRH; and all of the nurses and respiratory therapist of Extra Mural who were at our home providing so much wonderful care.</p> <p>Following cremation, visitation will be held at <strong>Fitzpatrick&rsquo;s Funeral Home</strong>, 100 Waterloo Street, Saint John, (634-1965) on Monday, December 3<sup>rd</sup> 2012 from 2-7pm.&nbsp; A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 4<sup>th</sup> 2012 at 11:00am from St. Peter&rsquo;s Church, followed by interment in St. Joseph&rsquo;s Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to Oncology/Social Work SJRH Foundation, Salvation Army, Romero House, Saint John Animal Rescue Shelter, or any charitable work of the donor&rsquo;s choice.
