Obituary of Douglas John French

<p>The death of Douglas J. French, B.C.L. of Saint John, N.B., husband of Lena T. (Gilks) French occurred on December 22, 2012. Born in Saint John on January 24, 1926, Doug was a son of the late Thomas and Sadie (Shattie) French of Hadchit, Lebanon.</p> <p>After attending St. Francis Xavier University and graduating from Law School at The University of New Brunswick in 1950, Doug practiced law in Saint John for twenty-three years before becoming a Pensions Advocate with Veterans Affairs Canada, where he worked until his retirement. Doug&rsquo;s greatest sense of professional satisfaction came from the service he provided to Canadian war veterans and, in particular, from his service to the First Nations&rsquo; veterans in New Brunswick. Doug was active in the community. This involvement included participation in the establishment of Loch Lomond Villa and later, his long standing support of the Salvation Army Christmas appeal.</p> <p>Doug&rsquo;s family was his first priority and greatest source of joy. He was predeceased by his parents and his older siblings; Raymond, Edmund, Charlie, Mary, Georgina, George and Thomas.</p> <p>Besides his wife of 53 years, Doug is survived by his children; Lois Bennett (Richard) of Waterborough, N.B., Raymond French (Jill Whitehouse) of Rothesay, Annemarie French (Claude Bourque) of Rothesay, and Douglas French (France Talbot) of Moncton and his 8 grandchildren; David, Colleen, William, Isabelle, Ian, Sean, James, and Catherine. Doug is also survived by his dear sister, Christina O&rsquo;Neill (the late Gerald) of Saint John, as well as 3 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.</p> <p>Visiting will be on Wednesday, December 26, 2012 from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 &ndash; 9:00 at <strong>Fitzpatrick&rsquo;s Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo Street</strong>, Saint John (634-1965). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 27 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Waterloo St. at 12:10 p.m. Interment to take place at St. Joseph&rsquo;s Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to Extra-Mural or to a charity of the donor&rsquo;s choosing.&nbsp;</p>
