Obituary of Marilyn Henderson

With great sorrow, family members announces the death of Marilyn Theresa Henderson on Tuesday, April 16, 2013. "Teekie" passed away peacefully at the Regional Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born in Saint John on January 13, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Parks) Doyle. For 53 years she was the wife of Brian Henderson with whom she had three children, Stephen (Judy), Russell (Margaret), and Susan (Tom Clark). She is also survived by her brother Thomas Doyle (Joan) and sisters Betty Connors, Mary Frances Smith (Joe) and Patricia Driscoll (Bob). A younger brother, Douglas, and one special niece, Mary Anne Connors, predeceased her. Four loving grandchildren, Mitchell Henderson, Peter Henderson, Lauren Henderson and Daniel Slattery, along with several nieces and nephews will join their parents in missing her greatly. She is also survived by Doreen Booker, a lifelong friend and steadfast supporter since they met at the age of five. Throughout all of life’s ups and downs, they were always able to make each other laugh and it remained that way even in Teekie’s final days.

Teekie had worked briefly for an insurance company after graduating from St. Vincent’s High School, but thereafter her priority was her home and family. She had numerous acquaintances, some quite close, but her leisure hours were primarily devoted to reading. The breadth of her reading fostered a wisdom of which she was never boastful, but which enabled her to share many lessons and stories with her children, grandchildren and others. She was definitely a teacher to those lucky enough to know her. Her illness and impending death were things she preferred to fight with dignity, but privately.

Still, the family wishes to acknowledge and express sincere gratitude to the many individuals who helped Teekie and us during what turned out to be ten long years. Particular thanks go to her sister-in-law Linda Tobias and Linda’s daughter, Jennifer. Her younger sisters, Mary Frances and Patsy, were pillars of support throughout Teekie’s life and were helpful in ways too numerous to mention on oh so many occasions. Her family physician, Dr. Arthur Kristoffersen, and many staff at the Regional Hospital, especially those of the Oncology Department and Palliative Care Unit, have our heartfelt thanks.

By Teekie’s request, there will be no visitation at this time. In lieu of flowers remembrances to the Scott Taylor Memorial Scholarship (Rothesay Netherwood School) or a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.

It is our sincere hope that our Teekie be remembered for her integrity, toughness in the face of adversity, and fierce independence. May she eternally rest in the peace that she most surely deserves.

Cremation and final arrangements have been entrusted to Fitzpatrick’s Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., Saint John, (634-1965) Interment will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 11:00 AM.
