Obituary of Mary J. McGrath

Mary J. McGrath passed away at her residence, Prince Edward Square Apartments, on Sunday, November 7, 2004. She was the widow of the late Peter C. McGrath, Saint John City Market wholesaler and retailer. Mrs. McGrath was born in Saint John on April 1, 1916, a daughter of the late William and Susan (Culley) O'Brien. She was a graduate of St. Vincent's Girls High School and a member of the alumnae. She had attended UNBSJ in the 1960's and was an avid reader, enjoying history, geography, and politics. During the 60's, 70's, and early 80's she was an active member of the Liberal Party of Canada. She was assigned a supervisory role during the 1971 census. Much of her time was donated to religious, community, and charitable groups and organizations. A lover of animals, she was an active member of the S.P.C.A. and was a directors for many years. She raised prize chinchillas, one placing second at a Canadian Championship. She received recognition for her gardens, a past-time she thoroughly enjoyed. She traveled to many near and faraway places with her dear friend, Carol Henderson of Nauwigewauk. In her later years she was a ward secretary on St. Joseph's Hospital eighth floor. The beloved companion of her husband, P. C. McGrath, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grand-mother. She was loved and will be missed. She is survived by two daughters, Carol M. (Robert) Seely, and Marilyn P. Ventzek, both of Saint John; one brother, Eugene C. O'Brien of Saint John; three grandchildren, Peter L. G. Ventzek of Austin, Texas, Phillip R. A. (Tracey Toner) Ventzek of Meadow Lake, Sask., and Helen E. Seely of Saint John; and two great-grandchildren, Shasta and Eli Ventzek of Meadow Lake. Her family would like to express appreciation and many thanks to the V.O.N. and the Red Cross, and sincere appreciation to Marlene Melanson of the V.O.N., a dedicated home support worker of four years. Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., with visiting on Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Friday morning at twelve o'clock. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Donations to the V.O.N., the S.P.C.A., the Red Cross, or the Alzheimer's Society would be appreciated.
