Obituary of D. Terence Murphy

With sadness in their hearts, the family of D. Terence Murphy (Terry) of Saint John, NB, announce the passing of Terry; in the comfort of his home and after an extended period of illness. Terry was born on October 10th, 1948 in Saint John, NB. He leaves behind, his beloved Myra, and their children, Dr. Annie Murphy Savoie (Gustave), D. James Murphy (Sara), Conan Murphy (Kristen), and Tiernan Murphy (Christina); his grandchildren: Alexandre Savoie, Maeve and Stella Murphy, Oliver and Bobby Murphy, and Finn, Fergus and Clara Murphy. He also leaves behind, his siblings: Anne L. Murphy, Joseph Murphy (Veronica), Christine Penney, and Jan Phillips (Mark), and as well many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Donald A. Murphy, his mother Constance O. (Whelly) Murphy and many uncles and aunties. Terry was a scholar, an educator and a friend to many people and enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends. He was an enthusiastic sommelier who enjoyed sharing his knowledge of wine with all. For 35 years, Dr. Terry Murphy worked for the New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) system helping to build the foundations of the Continuing Adult Education Program in New Brunswick. He was also a lecturer and researcher for the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in adult education. His love of life-long learning brought great fulfillment to his professional life with opportunities for travel to many areas around the world. He worked with Canadian International Development Agencies (CIDA) including Cuba, Jordan, Romania and Yemen. In earlier years Terry was an avid athlete and particularly enjoyed playing basketball; a joy that he shared with his children and his community through coaching, mentoring and participating at all levels. He was delighted to pass on his extensive sports knowledge to his grandchildren and all who would listen (Go, Red Sox!). Terry was an inspiration to his children and his cherished spouse, Myra. He will be deeply and sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. May his soul rest in peace. Instead of flowers, the Family requests that anyone wishing to honour Terry to please make a donation in his name to Saint John the Baptist Parish; which held a special place in Terry’s heart. The Family wishes to extend their gratitude to all those who assisted Terry in his final days; specifically, of the Extra-Mural Program: Dr. S. Thomas, the nurses Mylene, Shelly, Samantha, Lisa, Lois, Carol and Linda. As well, heartfelt thanks to Shelley (OT), Lorraine and Tara (RT), and Melissa (PT). Also, thank you to the staff of Apollo Medical, who helped keep him safe at home. A special thank you to Terry’s home caregivers from Bayshore: Wayne Magee, Don DeBow and Don Wood. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424). At Terry’s request, there will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at Saint John the Baptist Church, 54 Broad Street, Saint John on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at 12:00 PM. A reception will immediately follow in the Church’s basement. A private interment will follow at a later date.
