Charles McDevitt

Obituary of Charles Raymond McDevitt

It is with profound sadness that the family of Charles Raymond McDevitt announce his passing on December 12, 2017, at Bobby’s Hospice. Born August 1, 1929, in Petersville, N.B., Dad was the son of the late Charles and Esther Margaret (Doherty, Boston, MA) McDevitt and beloved husband of Arleigh (Bliss) McDevitt. Earlier in his life, Dad worked as a stevedore on the waterfront and later was employed by the City of Saint John, in the carpenters shop, until his retirement. He loved to fish and hunt and was never happier then when he was in the woods or planting his garden at the camp named "Sue". Every Christmas, we looked forward to receiving our "special box" filled with preserves and delicious pickles that he and Arleigh would make each Fall. Our Irish Roots came out through our Dad’s love of music, the fiddle and other instruments and we grew up to toe tapping fiddle music, at many gatherings (ceilidhs) often accompanied by talented family and friends- singing and laughing was a very common occurrence in our home. Dad was a member of the Park Avenue Fiddlers in Saint John until very recently. Besides his loving wife, Dad is survived by his brother; Ronnie (Jackie) McDevitt; his children: Janie(Steve) Lewis, Cathie (Gavin) Insley, Peter McDevitt, Wendy (Gary) Stephen, and Darren (Martha) McDevitt; son-in-law Rick (the late Susan) Smith; and is respectfully remembered by Margaret (Nice) McDevitt Boyle, mother of their children; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Judy Sultan; and brother-in-law, Barclay (Betty) Bliss; several cousins and wonderful nieces and nephews, and, of course his loving feline "Muffy" who will be lost without him. Besides his parents, Dad was predeceased by his sisters Kathryn Mullin and Esther Osborne. His children, twins Christine and Charles and daughters Janice McDevitt and Susan (Rick) McDevitt-Smith. The family would like to sincerely thank Drs. Graves, Dolan, and Davis, the Doctors and staff of the 5th floor, Regional Hospital and Dr. Chris O’ Brien and staff of Bobby’s Hospice for the wonderful care provided to Dad during his stay. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Thursday, December 14, 2017 from 6 to 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 15, 2017 at 12:10 pm from the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Interment will take place in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Petersville, NB. For those who wish, remembrances to Bobby’s Hospice, the Cherry Brook Zoo, or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. www.brenansfh.com
