Obituary of Dorothy Irene Lunney

Dorothy Irene Lunney, cherished wife of the late Dr. Thomas Edmund Lunney, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her beloved family on July 27, 2006. Family was the most important thing to Dorothy, affectionately known as “Dot”. Dorothy is survived by her seven children, Anne McIntyre, Susan Trussoni (Steve), Margot Lunney (Paul Vautour), Paul Lunney, Janet Richard (Mike), Sheelah McNamara (John), Robert Lunney (Dr. Marie-Andrée Quirion) and daughter-in-law, Jane Lunney. Dot had 21 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Her first grandchild, Mark McIntyre held a special place in her heart. Dorothy was born on March 23, 1918, the daughter of the late Judge Henry O. and Catherine McInerney. She is survived by her sisters, Mary McInerney, Eleanor Record, Joan Kennedy and her brother Harry McInerney (Elizabeth), her sister-in-law Eleanor Lunney, as well as by many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her brother George McInerney and her sisters Marion Watts, Marjorie Knoll, Christine McInerney, Rita Henneberry and Catherine “Bobby” Lawson. She was also predeceased by her brothers-in-law Judge James L. Lunney, David M. Lunney and his wife Charlotte. Dorothy graduated from Mount Carmel Academy in Saint John and trained as a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal. Her wonderful smile welcomed and warmed everyone she met. Dot lived to celebrate gatherings of her family. Her tradition of Christmas Eve gatherings of family, relatives and friends were celebrated with the very best of her delicious cooking. A keen observer of world events, she enjoyed debate and appreciated diverse opinions. She will be loved and remembered always. Dorothy received dialysis treatment for the last seven years of her life. The family is very appreciative for the care and attention she received from Dr. Paul Handa and the doctors, nurses and staff in Renal Dialysis at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Flowers are gratefully declined but donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation for the Renal Dialysis department. Dorothy’s body is resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, N.B. (634-7424) with visitation on Saturday and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 31, 2006 at 12:00 noon at Holy Trinity Church. Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
