Obituary of Edis Armstrong Flewwelling

Edis Flewwelling, Second World War Soldier, Career Soldier, Managing Director of Lonewater Farm, Mayor, Councillor, Author, Community Volunteer, was born in Clifton Royal, NB in 1918 and died peacefully, surrounded by his wife and family in the Saint John Regional Hospital, September 20, 2006. Edis was a true son of New Brunswick. Growing up during the depression he was the eldest son of the late Hazel (Wetmore) and Edis H. Flewwelling. During the Second World War he was attached to the Fourth Anti-Tank Division. He served as a Major in the U.K., Italy and Northwest Europe. After the War he settled in Bridgetown, NS. He rejoined the Canadian Military in the early 1950’s. He served with the 2nd Canadian Guards. In 1968 Edis retired from the Military and began a new career as Managing Director of Lonewater Farm, an alcoholic rehabilitation center. The Major as he was fondly called, loved his years at the farm which he chronicled in his book Tales of Lonewater Farm. Retiring from his position at Lonewater Farm in 1986, Edis began a career in Marketing with the Maritime Opportunity Centre and A-1 Auctioneers. Edis was active throughout his life with community organizations volunteering with Crime Stoppers and the Canadian Cancer Society. He served many years as Vice-President of the NB Chapter of St. John Ambulance. Edis was elected Mayor of Saint John from 1974-1977 and spent twelve years on the council. In recent years Edis was an active member of the Lancaster Golden Senior’s the Magic Club and The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #69. He was a Kings Scout and was a Cub and Boy Scout Leader and hockey coach. Edis wrote and published: “Tales of Lonewater Farm”, Fritz of Arnham” and “The little Red Book of Meeting Facts”. Edis was predeceased by his first wife “Betty” Mary Elizabeth (Knowlton), his siblings, (Madge) Marguerite Langley, Paul (Jean) and Malcolm (Alva). He will be mourned by his wife Jane (McKenna de Kruyff), sons: Edis (Jessie), Peter (Bessie) and Mark (Colleen), Step-children, Eric, Ellen and Patrick (Lorena) de Kruyff; grandchildren, great grandchild, sister-in-law, Jean; many nephews and nieces. Edis leaves a legacy of love, friendship, fellowship and service. We shall miss him. Resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Friday from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Memorial service will held for Edis on Saturday, September 23, 2006 at 11:00 am in Trinity Church, 115 Charlotte Street, Saint John, with Archdeacon Richard McConnell officiating. Interment will follow in Fernhill Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a gathering at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Rothesay. Donations may be made to the St. John Ambulance or charity of one’s choice. The Royal Canadian Legion will hold a tribute to a Veteran service on Friday evening at 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
