Obituary of A. Frances May

The family of Frances May (nee Crowley) wish to celebrate her long and eventful life, which ended on Monday, August 31, 2009 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. She was born on September 20, 1918 in Saint John, NB to the late Harry E. and Alice T. (Alexander) Crowley. Frances is survived by two daughters: Kathryn Anthony-May (Jodie L. Beatty) and Monica Conrad (Brian); five grandchildren: Mercedes Rodriguez and Amanda (Matthew Ott), Jessica, Oliver and Theresa Conrad; four great grandchildren: Xavier, Avery, Noah and Maeve. Besides her parents, Frances was predeceased by her husband Joseph P. May and her brother, Ronald Crowley. After graduating from St. Vincent’s High in 1936, Frances served overseas with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps from 1941-1946 attaining the rank of Sergeant. Upon returning to Canada, she attended the Halifax Infirmary, attaining her RN in 1951. She then joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps, serving in Northern Communities from 1952-1955; retiring from active duty to raise her family. After residing overseas, northern, central and eastern Canada, the family returned to Saint John in 1968. Following her husband’s death in 1970, she returned to nursing, practicing at the Saint John General/Regional Hospital until her retirement in 1984. Frances was a long standing member (41 years) and past-President of the Royal Canadian Legion, Fundy Branch #68. She also was very active in her community, volunteering her knitting skills for the mitts and caps program for preemies at the Regional Hospital. Frances was a member of the Quispamsis Seniors’ Club and Admiral Beatty Social Club. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Royal Canadian Legion Tribute Service will be held on Wednesday at 7 pm during visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 3, 2009 from the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 91 Waterloo Street at 10 am. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. www.brenansfh.com
