Obituary of Travis Wentworth Cushing

Dr. Travis Wentworth Cushing, born July 28, 1915, died November 18, 2009. He was the son of Cora Wentworth and Theophilous Cushing. Predeceased by his wife, Gladys v. Holder Cushing. Survived by his daughter, Jane of Saint John, and his son, Allison and his wife, Linda Leon, of Whitehorse, YT. Dr. Cushing was a life-long educator. He taught in a one room school and city schools. He was a principal, pupil personnel worker, Deputy Superintendent of Schools in Saint John, and Superintendent of Special Education for the Atlantic Region. In his retirement he served as a Provincial Education Consultant. He was a member of the founding committee for UNBSJ. Dr. Cushing was very active in the community serving in a wide variety of capacities. He received the Canada Volunteer award for his contributions. The Canadian Mental Health Association named a scholarship in honour of his service to the Association in his two terms as National President. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 12:00 Noon from Brenan's Chapel. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to UNBSJ or the Palliative Care Unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital would be appreciated by the family.
