Obituary of Hilda M. Dunn

DUNN, Hilda M.October 26,1931 – June 10, 2011 Following a brave and valiant fight with cancer, our precious mother was called home to be with our Heavenly Father, on June 10, 2011. She was born on October 26, 1931 in Mundleville, Kent Co., NB to Percy and Marjorie (MacEachern) Wilson. As a young woman, she fulfilled her love of working with children and travel through employment as a nanny for families in the Montreal and Ottawa regions. Upon returning to Saint John, she met and married her future husband, Burleigh. Those who had the good fortune of knowing her describe her as a loyal and fearless woman, friend, sister, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a pillar of strength and wisdom. She was an exceptional individual, whose generosity, love and kindness knew no bounds. She worked hard to instill a sense of fairness, equality and compassion in her children. She enjoyed quoting Scripture and had an unwavering faith in God. She was an avid reader of history and biographies, and in her younger years, found great contentment reciting Bible stories to her children. She had an exceptional work ethic. In her later years, she would often reminisce about the pleasures and challenges of bringing up a large family on a potato and dairy farm in Carleton County, NB, where long hours and hard work were the norm. Throughout her seventy-nine years, she lead by example, extolling the virtues of hard work, dedication and charity to others. Her greatest aspiration was not to accumulate wealth or become the chairwoman of an important committee, but to be a warm, loving mother to the nine children who are honored to have been blessed with her guidance, love and wisdom. She is survived by daughters, Susan (Sam) Dobson of Saint John; Marjorie (Frank) Wiebe of Tynemouth Creek; Lori (Wade) Delong of Windsor, NB; Arlene (John) Dunn-Hogan of Willow Grove; sons Lynwood of Bloomfield (Carleton Co.); Greg (Sonya) of Saint John; Troy (Julie) of Heidelberg, Ont; Gerald (Jerry) of Saint John; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sisters Irene Wilson of Rexton, Olive (Rev. Vince) Spence of Moncton, Bessie Sheils of Saint John, Nelda (James) Benson of Grand Manan, and brother, Chester Wilson of Saint John. She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, a son, William, and grandson Wayne, as well as brothers Cecil, Thomas, and Ralph. The funeral arrangements are entrusted to Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). A private family funeral service will be held, with interment taking place in the Bloomfield United Church Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Saint John Regional Hospital – Palliative Care Unit would be greatly appreciated by the family. Online condolences may be placed at www.brenansfh.com
