Obituary of The Rev'd Canon Brian H. Campion

The Rev’d Canon Brian Hadden Campion of New River Beach, husband of Ann G. (Forbes) Campion, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, following a period of failing health. Born in Ballycastle, Northern Ireland on January 26, 1925, he was a son of the late Rev’d Canon John Robert Campion and Eileen Ethel (Haddon) Campion. Canon Campion was a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin and served in parishes in Ireland until immigrating to Canada in 1959. He served as Rector of Plaster Rock, St. Mary’s Fredericton, St. Paul’s Rothesay, and Canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Fredericton. He then moved to Montreal where he was Rector of Trinity Memorial Church, returning to Saint John in 1984 to become Rector of St. Paul’s Valley Church until 1990, when he retired from active Priesthood. Always active in the Diocese, Canon Campion served as Chair of the Diocesan School of Church Music, and served on the General Synod and Doctrine and Worship Committee, the Board of King’s College Halifax, Rothesay Collegiate School and Netherwood School, the Liturgical Commission for the Plan of Union, Chairman of the Liturgical Committee in the Diocese of Fredericton and Montreal, the Montreal Diocesan Council, and the Provincial Synod. Canon Campion also served as Chaplain to the Royal Canadian College of Organists (Montreal Centre) and also as Chaplain to the Royal Canadian Legion N.D.G. Branch Montreal. In addition to his wife of 50 years, Canon Campion is survived by his son, The Rev’d Canon Peter Campion (Rebecca) of Dublin, Ireland; his daughter, Jennifer Campion of Rothesay; grandchildren Nicolas, Peter, Cressida, and Felix; his sister, Joyce E. Campion of Stratford, Ontario; and several nieces and nephews. Resting at the Church of St. John Baptist (Mission Church) and St. Clement, 815 Millidge Avenue, Saint John, with visiting on Sunday, January 22, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 23, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the church. Interment will take place at a later date.
