Obituary of Richard B. Costello Q.C.

Richard B. Costello, Q.C., 61 of Rothesay passed away with his family by his side at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Monday, March 12, 2012. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick on January 1, 1951, he was the son of Frances (Sloat) Costello and the Late Ralph Costello. He leaves behind his loving wife of 32 years Linda (Murray) Costello; children Kate, Colin, Laura, and Michael; his mother Frances Costello; a brother Randy (Christine) Costello of Ottawa; his grand-daughter and apple of his eye Ava; and two nephews, Nicholas and David Costello. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grand-father and friend. He was known for his knowledge of all subjects, his love of law, history and literature and his capacity for good conversation. Richard attended the University of New Brunswick in Saint John and graduated with a BBA in 1972. He attended the University of New Brunswick Law School graduating in 1975 and was admitted to the Law Society of New Brunswick in 1975. Richard practiced as a Trial Lawyer throughout the Province of New Brunswick, principally defending Insurers. He gave distinguished service to his community and to his profession. He served as an elected member of the Town of Rothesay Council in the early 1990’s and served as a member of the Rothesay Police Commission. He was actively involved with the Law Society of New Brunswick. Richard served four terms as a member of the Council of the Law Society of New Brunswick and served on numerous committees. In 2000, he established with others the Saint John office of McInnes Cooper. In 2010, he was invited to become a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers an award of which he was very proud. His family would like to thank and acknowledge the Staff of the Saint John Regional Hospital for their outstanding care and compassion. They would in particular like to acknowledge all the staff in the department of Oncology, and especially the nurses of 5A South, his hematologist Dr. Sean Dolan and his nurse associate Karen Kearney, and his friend and physician, Dr. Eshwar Kumar.
