Obituary of E. Ruth Greene

It is with great sadness that the family wishes to announce the unexpected passing of E. Ruth (Titus) Greene of Saint John, wife of the late Hugh S. Greene, which occurred on Saturday March 31, 2012 after a brief illness at the Turnbull Nursing Home. Born in Saint John on February 9, 1926, she was the youngest daughter of the late Louis A. and Audrey (McDiarmid) Titus. She was a graduate of Saint John High School (1943) and the Nursing Class of 1947 of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. She married in 1948 and lived in Westmount and Lachine (Quebec), Prescott (Ontario) and Pointe Claire (Quebec). After the untimely death of her husband in 1958 Ruth returned home and lived the remainder of her life in Saint John. She worked for her father at the Titus Drug Company, then for the Saint John General Hospital holding various positions in In-service Education, Coronary Care Unit, Enterostomal Therapy and at the Saint John Regional Hospital in the Data Processing Department until her retirement in 1988 with 28 years of service. Ruth was an active member of St. Paul’s (Valley) Anglican Church, and also served on the vestry, St. Paul’s Needlepoint Society and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Ruth is survived by her son David (Brenda) Greene and daughters Meredith Greene and Margot (Steven) Leavitt all of Saint John. She is also survived by her grandchildren Tara (Darren) Pollock of Halifax, Matthew (De Mitchell) Greene of Edmonton, Shanny (Luke Agius) Leavitt of Melbourne, Australia, Krista (Wayne) Stewart and Randi (Andrew) Stewart both of Saint John and her great grandchildren Davis and Destin Pollock, Cameron, Morgan and Mason Stewart and Owen Agius . She was predeceased by her sister Meredith (Titus) Burgar, her beloved granddaughter Maggie Nugent and her great-grandson Finn Agius. Ruth is also survived by nieces Jay Mandy and Janice Keith and nephews Chip Hair and Rodney Burgar as well as numerous McDiarmid cousins. Ruth’s annual joy was the anticipation of the opening of her cottage at Acamac, the fun times, family meals, swimming and bonfires. Later when she retired she enjoyed the peace and tranquility of her surroundings as she smocked dresses or did needlepoint projects. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren, playing games and watching them grow up. Ruth enjoyed her bridge games, was an avid reader and regularly attended the Imperial Theater. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Friday, April 20, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 11:00 am. A private family interment will take place at a later date at Fernhill Columbarium.
