Obituary of Elizabeth Betty Yvonne Morrow

Surrounded by her family, the death of Betty Morrow occurred on Tuesday April 10, 2012 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. She was born on September 5, 1924 in Saint John and has spent the last year in Rocmaura Nursing Home. Betty was a life resident of Saint John. She grew up on Rockland Road, one of eight children, the daughter of John and Ada (Charlton) Butler. She attended Holy Trinity Church and school until she left school to join the war effort. As a young woman she worked for Leo Gilbert who operated a small grocery store and fruit stand on Coberg Street. Betty loved to skate and ski at Lily Lake. In 1947 she and a girlfriend visited New York City on a two week holiday and she developed a fond affection for that city, which she visited many times through her life. In 1948, she married William "Bill" Morrow in St. Luke’s Anglican Church. They moved to Kennedy Place in the North End. Betty was an active member of the congregation and a member of the Young Woman’s Guild. As a member of the IODE, she participated in the project to construct the block house at Fort Howe. She enjoyed summers on the Kingston Peninsula with her husband and children. Betty was a ‘stay at home’ mom; she was involved with the Home and School Association at Lorne and Alexandra Schools. Betty then worked part-time at Calp’s Department Store and full-time at the Kennebec Nursing Home until her retirement. She will be greatly missed by her children: daughter, Mary-Ellen Costello (Michael) of Saint John and their children: William and Emma; son, William "Bill" Morrow (Judy) of Bay Roberts, NL and their children: Neil and Aaron; daughter, Rizpah Morrow (Wayne Longmore) of New York, NY and their daughter, Nell. Betty is also survived by a sister, Mary MacAlpine of Penticton, BC. She was predeceased by her parents and husband, Bill. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). A private committal service will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery.
