Ellen Ruth Blayney died peacefully in her room at Rocmaura Nursing Home on May 17, 2012. Ruth was born on November 12, 1923 in Simcoe, Ontario and was the daughter of Clarence and Margaret (Hair). Ruth worked in the clerical department of the American Can Company in both Simcoe and Hamilton, for 39 years until her retirement in 1984. Following the death of her father, Ruth spent most of her time caring for her ill mother until she passed away at the age of 102. In her early years, Ruth enjoyed ballroom dancing and won many competitions doing so. She was also an avid gardener, learning from her father who operated a substantial apple orchard. Ruth was a generous person and was very giving with her time as she volunteered at the Eva Brook Donley Museum, The Norfolk Historical Society, and was an active member of the UCW at her church, St. James United Church in Simcoe. Ruth moved to New Brunswick in 2002 and took up residence at Seely Lodge where she could be closer to her family. She was well cared for and thoroughly enjoyed the horses and the country setting. Ruth’s final years would be spent in Trinity Court, Rocmaura where she often treated the residence and staff to her wonderful sense of humor. She is survived by her sister, Patricia Bell (Blayney), nephews Mike Bell, James Bell, and Andrew Bell, niece Melanie Bell Hughes (John), cousins Fred Blayney (Dora Mae), and Joyce MacTavish. She was pre-deceased by her brother-in-law, Thomas Bell. A private memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 19th, with interment to take place at a later date in Simcoe.
