Obituary of Marion Beattie

Beattie, Marion Rutherford- We regret to announce the death of Marion Rutherford Robb Beattie ,born on May 2, 1923, Marion was predeceased by her husband James W. A. Beattie of Glasgow, Scotland and Saint John, NB. She is also predeceased by two sisters , Jean B. Watson and Carolyn K. Grubb and one brother Edward K. Robb. Marion is survived by one son, Angus Beattie P.Eng and one daughter, Dr. Kathryn McLellan; three grandsons, Duncan Beattie, Colin Beattie and Iain Beattie. Also survived by niece Dr. Wendy Watson-Wright of Paris and nephew Gordon Watson of Riverview, Richard, David and John Grubb of BC; Susan, Nancy, Ned, Peggy, Christine and John Robb. Also survived by several grand nieces and nephews. Marion was born and educated in Halifax, NS and worked in Halifax as a secretary. Her family was moved to Moncton. There she joined the Canadian Red Cross Corps. She applied for overseas duty as an EIU, bringing wives and children of Canadian Servicemen back to Canada. She served aboard the "Letitia" as a V.A,D. [Nurses Aide]. On the last trip to Canada the ship was renamed "Empire Brent" Marion went on to other duties after returning home and joined the Canadian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service in Edmonton, Alberta with Dr. W. S. Stanbury’s team. From there to Calgary, then to Toronto as a secretary, Montreal, Halifax and Saint John where she was an Executive Secretary . Marion was an excellent swimmer, winning many prizes as a young girl. In later years she taught swimming and also had a class for church outreach for "Headstart" children. Other church outreach programs were with the women’s groups making soup for Romero House and at the first food bank. She was also involved with the church at the breakfast program at Prince Charles School. She passed peacefully with her family at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Friday, July 13, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A funeral service will be celebrated from Grace Presbyterian Church, 101 Coburg Street, Saint John on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 9 AM. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery.
