Obituary of Douglas DuVernet Short

Douglas DuVernet Short of Saint John passed away peacefully at Ridgewood Veterans Wing on Friday July 12, 2013 at 92 years of age. He was born in Central Greenwich, November 5, 1920 and was the last surviving son of Langford Bliss and Blanche (Lasquie) Short. He was predeceased by siblings Herbert, Louis, Bill, Murray, Walter and Dorothy Short (Kerr). Doug enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1939 and spent 6 years serving his country in WWII overseas. As a member of the Saint John Fusiliers he joined the Royal Regiment of Canada. During his time in Europe he saw action in Luxemburg, France, Germany, England, the Netherlands and Belgium. On May 15, 1940, Doug married Evelyn Priscilla (Belyea) Short (deceased), and began their family of four: Douglas L. Short Jr., Kathryn F. Short (Joe Mullin), Carol B. Madsen (Erik) and Joanne P. Short, all of Saint John. Doug has three grandchildren Christopher McIlveen of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Dawn McDevitt (Mark) of Saint John and Adrien Labrecque of Central Greenwich; four great grandchildren, Gordon and Colin Wilson and Carter and Cooper McDevitt. He is also survived by many cousins, nephews and nieces and their children. Doug is also survived by his second wife, Mary (Kelly) Short and her seven children, John, Tommy, Danny, Paul, Bill, Agnes, Margaret Ann and daughter -in-law Lynn, wife of the late David Kelly, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Douglas worked for 30 years at the Provincial Hospital as a painter and spent many summer nights painting houses in the city’s North End. He was very involved with the Portland Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Fusiliers Club, where he served many years as President. Doug Short will always be remembered for his beautiful blue eyes (with just a hint of mischief), his love of painting, music and great tunes on his harmonica. Always quick with a joke and a smile, Doug was a wonderful father and a loving husband. His faith was touched with curiosity, and his strength of spirit will guide him on this final journey to a well deserved rest in the arms of his Lord. The Short family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Ridgewood Veterans Wing for their kindness and loving care over the past 2 years.
