Obituary of F. Winfield Hackett

The unexpected death of Win Hackett, loving husband of Lorie Cohen Hackett occurred with his family at his side on Monday, September 30, 2013. He was born on June 9, 1940 in Montreal, QC to the late F. Winfield and Eva (Ryan) Hackett. Win led a varied life. He is known for hosting "Reach for the Top", a TV Game Show; he was Executive Assistant to the Hon. Richard Hatfield, Premier of NB; he taught at and was Headmaster of Rothesay Collegiate School; was Executive Director of the PC Party of New Brunswick; Executive Director of the NB Bicentennial Commission; Deputy Minister in the Office of the Premier; Executive Director, National Entrepreneurship Development Institute, Montreal, QC; member of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada and most recently was appointed Vice-Chair, WorkSafe NB Appeals Tribunal. Win was a proud graduate of St. FX University and was also awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2002 and a Hon. Doctorate of Law from St. Thomas University in 1984. Win lived his life to the fullest. He loved New Brunswick and enjoyed good friends and family, sharing stories, spirited debates on any topic, music, reading, art, good food and good wine. Besides his wife, Lorie; Win is survived by his daughters: Margaret Anne Totten (Terry) and Debbie Hackett both of Saint John, NB; the mother of his children, Anna Hackett; brothers: Michael of Stanstead, QC and Ryan (Margaret) of Belleville, ON; sisters: Cora Hackett and Eva Rose Hackett both of Montreal, QC and Ann LeHane of Rhinebeck, NY and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Sybil Hackett; brother, John Hackett; sisters-in-law: Olive and Yolande Hackett and brother-in-law, Robert LeHane. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424) with visiting on Wednesday from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 33 Gondola Point Road, Rothesay, NB on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 12:00 noon. For those who wish, remembrances to Bobby’s Hospice, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of NB or the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
