Obituary of Canon Donald F. L. Trivett CD, BA

Reverend Canon Donald F. L. Trivett passed away on October 8, 2013 at Bobby’s Hospice, Saint John. Don was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on January 20, 1929. Over his extensive career, he worked in many parishes throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. In more recent years, he often worked on special tasks required by the Diocese and was a mentor and friend to thousands of parishioners. Don graduated from the University of King’s College, where he was a senior student during his academic years, graduating with a degree in divinity in 1952. It was at King’s College, he met Gloria Jean Teed his wife of 60 years, who predeceased him in 2011. Don’s ministry led him in many interesting directions. He was chaplain at Dalhousie University and King’s College for 15 years, starting in 1965. He worked with the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax and was at one time a board member at King’s College and was also involved with the Institute of Pastoral Training. Don was also on the admissions board of Dalhousie University Medical School. He was involved with CUSO, adult education, social work and the Nova Scotia Drug Dependency Board. During his career, he was a Major in the militia, serving as a chaplain with the 8th Sussex Hussars, and enjoyed his summer deployments to Camp Aldershot. As well, Don worked for the Nova Scotia government as the Chairman of the Amusements and Regulations Board. Don was made a Canon of the Nova Scotia Diocese before his retirement in 1995. However, he continued to work at this calling long after his retirement to New Brunswick. In recognition for this continued service, Don was made Canon in the Diocese of New Brunswick on September 12, 2013 and continued working right up until his death. Being a Canon in two Dioceses was an honour of which he was most proud. He is survived by his brother, Gordon (Anne) of Charlottetown; sisters, Marjorie Belovich of Ottawa and Barbara Service (Nigel) of Halifax. He is also survived by his children, Jean Stratford (predeceased by Ron) of Halifax, Anne Harris (Gary) of New Minas, John (Carolyn) of Quispamsis, Katy Jacobs (Bruce) of Winnipeg, Richard of Charlottetown and Daniel (Michel) of Halifax; also survived by grandchildren, Andrew and Alec Stratford (Joelle), Jennifer Harris (Josh), William, Matthew and Sarah Trivett, Sam and Rachel Jacobs, Olivia and Lily Trivett as well as two great-grandchildren, Jevon and Jaxon Harris. Visitation will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church Hall, 4 Church Avenue, Rothesay, NB, on Tuesday, October 15, from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:30 - 8:30 PM. The funeral service will be held from St. Paul’s Anglican Church on Wednesday, October 16, at 2:00 PM. Interment will take place in All Saints Cemetery, Clifton Royal. In lieu of flowers, remembrances made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, Bobby’s Hospice, Anglican Parish of Kingston or to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
