Mary was predeceased by her husband Dr. Thomas A. Foster in 2010 and is survived by her five children, Gary (Keltie), Joan (Bob Hurst), David (Susan), Douglas, Linda (Cheryl); five grandchildren, Michael (Stephanie), Angela, John, David and Jane; and three sisters, Margaret Anne Langmaid, Dorothea Beckwith, Olga Grant, and one brother John Bate. She was predeceased by her sister Constance Sinclair and brother Dr. George Bate. Mary was born in Fredericton, NB in 1926 to The Venerable Archdeacon Alban F. and Norah (Warburton) Bate. She graduated from Saint John High School in 1943 and Edgehill School for Girls in Windsor, Nova Scotia. Mary was a graduate of the Nursing School of Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. In 1950, she married Thomas Ainslie Foster and they eventually moved to Saint John to raise their five children. Mary was a long time member of St. Paul’s (Valley) Church and was active in the Needlework Society and Altar Guild. In recent years, she attended Trinity Anglican Church and was a member of Chi Rho Club. While a member of The Riverside Country Club, Mary was the lead for a mixed curling team skipped by Tom, which won the NB championship and subsequently represented NB in the 1970 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in Vancouver, BC. Mary, Tom and their children spent many happy summers boating on the St. John River and the Atlantic coastal waters. When their sons Gary and David opened Fundy Fish at Market Square, she was part of the family venture working behind the counter. Mary will be best remembered in her role as mother and grandmother; she was happiest when surrounded by family. After Tom’s passing, she continued the tradition of weekly Tuesday family lunches where all were made welcome. Visitation will be held at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John on Friday, December 20, 2013 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. A funeral service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 10:30 AM. For those who wish, remembrances to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
