Obituary of Hon. Rodman Emmason Logan QC, CD, BA, BCL

Logan, Hon. Rodman Emmason QC, CD, BA, BCL, DCL. At his residence on September 15, 2004. Son of the late G. Earle Logan QC and Emma Zela (Irwin) Logan. Husband of the late Evelyn P. (DeWitt) Logan. Born the 7th of September 1922 in West Saint John. Survived by sons Colonel John (Susan), David (Jill), Bruce (Jane) and daughter Mary Jane Logan Hill (James); and grandchildren Emma, Patricia, Sydney, Nathalie, James, Claire and Ian. Predeceased by sister Geraldine and brother John. Rod was born and grew up in West Saint John. After graduation from RCS he enlisted in the Canadian Army and served overseas with the Carleton and York Regiment as a platoon commander. Wounded at Ortona and the Gothic Line battles, he returned to Canada at war's end and entered UNB where he read History and from which he received his law degree. He practiced law between 1951-1970 with Logan, Bell and Church and was called to the inner bar in 1972. Active in politics, he was elected to the Kings County Council (1952-54) and represented first St. John County and then Saint John West in the Legislative Assembly between 1963-1982. He was a member of the Executive Council during Conservative governments of the late Richard Hatfield, first as Provincial Secretary (1970-72) and Minister of Labour (1970-77) and then as Attorney General and Minister of Justice (1977-82). He retired from political life upon appointment to the Court of Queen's Bench where he served as a Justice of the Family Division from 1982-1996. Rod maintained a lifelong passion for the military, politics and the law. He was active throughout his life in regimental, professional, and cultural associations as well as the interests and pursuits of his wife and children, church and community. He was Honourary Colonel of 1 RNBR, Governor and Colonel Commandant of the NB-PEI Division of the Corps of Commissionaires, Honourary Solicitor (1953-70) and then Grand Patron of the New Brunswick Command of the Royal Canadian Legion, and “team doctor” to many of his children's football and lacrosse teams. He loved to travel and was never happier then when planning trips to “ the old country” or “sunny Italy” Resting at his residence, 273 Nerepis Road, Westfield, NB. Visiting on Friday September 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm and on Saturday from 2-5 pm. Funeral service from Trinity Anglican Church, Saint John, NB on Monday September 20 at 11 am. Interment in Nase Cemetery, Westfield at a later date. Donations to the Parish of the Nerepis & St. John Building Fund would be appreciated.
