Obituary of Dena Elizabeth Garnett

Dena Elizabeth Garnett, wife for 61 years of the late George Kyle Garnett, passed away peacefully in her 98th year on Saturday, August 9, 2014, at Turnbull Nursing Home surrounded by her family. Born in Saint John, NB on September 1st, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Annie (McKillop) Sweeney. Dena is survived by her children, Alice Thorne, Dena Langille (Ron), Gail Gallant (Tom), son Eric and Debbie Long (Jim) all of Saint John and Jane Kelly (Kevin) of Russellville, Alabama. She is also remembered fondly by eighteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and twenty great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family. Dena is survived by her sister Patricia Melanson and sister-in-law Jacqueline Garnett both of Saint John. Dena was predeceased by her sisters Louise Creighton, Frances Thompson, Ollie Harrison and brother Jim Sweeney. Dena was a lifetime member of the Catholic Women’s League and was twice President of the Cathedral CWL. A long standing member of St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary, she was also President of that organization and received a Life Membership of the Canadian Association of Health Care Auxiliary. She looked forward to summers in Loch Lomond and always welcomed family and friends. In her later years, she enjoyed travelling. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424) with visiting on Sunday, August 10 from 1-3 and 6-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Monday, August 11, 2014, at 12:10 PM. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to Turnbull Nursing Home, Cathedral Restoration Fund, St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary or to a charity of the donor's choice.
