Obituary of M. Rita Sully

It is with heavy hearts the family of Rita Sully announce her passing which occurred on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Rocmaura Nursing Home. Born in Saint John on June 24, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Helena (Doherty) and James Kennedy. Rita was a lifelong parishioner of St. Peter’s Church and was active in various church groups. She served on the first parish council, was a member of the CWL for over 60 years, she was a Brown Owl of St. Peter’s Brownies for over 25 years, was a member of St. Elizabeth’s Society and also served as a Lector. Rita was involved in many community organizations as well, including; Christopher’s, North End Food Bank, Women’s Inter-Church Council and St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary. She spent her working life in retail, helping people in various businesses in the city. Rita worked at Zellers on King Street, Factory Shoe Outlet and Hoffman’s Clothing from where she retired in 1992. In her younger years, Rita found joy acting in many plays in the St. Peter’s community. She loved knitting, solving crossword puzzles and playing cards. She will always be remembered for her articulate story telling. She is survived by her children; Wendy Sully and Tom Sully (Donna), three grandchildren; Kim Magee (Frank), Tracy Craig (Scott) and Jason Sully (Corry Toole), three great grandchildren; Parker Craig and Renee and Daryl Sully; a special nephew George Kennedy (Jane Prosser); a niece Marry Ballard (Jerry Hayes); a sister-in-law Irene Kennedy of Vancouver, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Rita was predeceased by a brother, James and several step sisters in Massachusetts. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424) with visiting on Thursday, January 8, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter’s Church, 50 Clarendon Street, Saint John on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 10:00 am. Interment will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Alzheimer Society of NB would be appreciated by the family.
