Obituary of Majorie-Anne MacDonald

Marjorie Anne Hillman Taylor MacDonald passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Sunday, 29 March at the age of 97. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, on 26 May 1917, the daughter of Colonel A.J. and Marjorie Taylor, Marjorie Anne ("Jan") received a B.A. degree from McMaster University, a M.Sc. degree from Northwestern University and D. Litt. from Saint Mary’s University. After joining her father at his wartime appointment in Saint John and while working as a reporter for the Saint John Times-Globe, Jan met and married Capt. Harold S. MacDonald. After the war, they raised two children at their home in Rothesay, New Brunswick. Jan worked as a research associate for the New Brunswick Museum, and was a Provincial Government appointee to the Fort LaTour Development Authority. She was an active member and past president of the Rothesay Heritage Trust. The author of three widely respected history books and numerous scholarly articles, she both curated and assisted in the preparation of a number of exhibits for the Museum, and a number of films. She is survived by her daughter Catharine, son Geoffrey (Roberta), grandson James (Kristen), and great grand-daughter Alexis. The family is also very grateful for the care and support of the team of care workers provided by Senior Watch. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). A funeral service will be held on Thursday, 2 April at 2:00 pm in Brenan’s Chapel. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Red Cross Society and Saint John SPCA Animal Rescue.
