Obituary of Muriel Prince Loughery

Muriel Prince Loughery passed away peacefully on December 30, 2022, at Saint John Regional Hospital after a brief illness at the age of 97. Born on July 8, 1925, to Winfred and Fannie (Dickson) Darling, Muriel was born in Hammond River in the parlour of her family’s farmhouse.

Graduating as a Rothesay High School Valedictorian, she trained as a secretary, and then retrained as a Home Economics teacher. She taught at Lawrence Station, Minto and Saint John Vocational schools. In Minto, she met fellow teacher, Harry Douglas Loughery, who she was happily married to for 41years. A shy, private person, her passions included family, baking, sewing, needlework, piano playing, and gardening.

Muriel is survived by her four adoring children: George (Sharon), Diane (Allan), Jim (Madeleine, predeceased), Sharon (Doug); stepdaughter Christa (Alan); grandchildren: James (Kathryn), Kenneth (Mary), Benjamin (Ligia), Oliver, Sarah, Sophie; step grandchildren Elijah and Chloe Rosa; great grandson: Arthur; nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her husband, Harry Douglas Loughery (1993), his brothers and wives: Eric (Lois), Claude (Vi), Talmadge (Faith); her parents Winfred and Fannie; and all her immediate family: Lewis (Marjorie), Margaret (Lou), Roly (Dorothy), John (Phyllis), Winifred (Laurence) and Alice (Earle).

A deeply cherished and wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Muriel was hard-working, caring and kind, fiercely loyal and supportive to all she loved. She will be greatly missed. The last of her generation.
