Obituary of Rev. M. Dwight Stuart

The death of Maurice Dwight Stuart occurred on January 7, 2023 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was born on February 23, 1944 in St. Stephen, N.B. to A. Rudolph Stuart and Cora (Calder) (Stuart) Fountain of Deer Island, N.B. Dwight was predeceased by his wife Carol A. (Orchard) Stuart in 2016.

Dwight left his home in Deer Island, N.B. at a young age to attend United Baptist Bible Training School in Moncton, N.B. He continued his education at Teachers College and The University of New Brunswick. Dwight enjoyed a 35 year teaching career, retiring in 2000 from N.B.C.C. – Saint John Campus. Never one to sit idle for very long, he soon began a new career in the wine making industry at Barley Malt and Vine. Dwight enjoyed making new friends at the store and teaching all who would listen about fine wine. A man of strong faith, Dwight was ordained as an Anglican priest in June 2019. He thoroughly enjoyed serving in the Parish of Fundy and the Lakes, making many visits to people, and offering comfort to those in need. His compassion knew no bounds.

Dwight spent many happy days at his cottage on Deer Island, always finding a project that needed his attention. He enjoyed shopping trips to Maine and New Hampshire, always on the lookout for a good deal. He was fortunate to have also travelled abroad, notably to Honduras for mission trips with the church.

Dwight is survived by his daughter Jennifer (Peter) Lavigne and son Joel (Carla) Stuart, his three grandsons Zack Lavigne, Jake Stuart and Lucas Stuart. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law Richard Richardson and Neil Orchard, sisters-in-law Irene (Carl) Thorne, Barb Ekstrom, stepsister Marilyn Taylor, nieces and nephews and very special friend Gail Fanjoy.

In addition to his parents and wife, Dwight was predeceased by his sister R. Charlene Richardson, stepfather Stuart Fountain, father and mother-in-law Ralph and Kathleen Orchard, brother-in- law Randy Ekstrom, sister-in-law Linda Orchard and stepsister Rheta MacElwaine.

Dwight’s family wishes to thank the physicians, nurses, and staff from 3BN (Palliative Care) at the Saint John Regional Hospital for their compassion and care during his stay. We are truly grateful.
