Obituary of Suzanne Humphrey

Eleanor Suzanne "Sue" MacKeen Humphrey – 86.

Born in Rothesay NB, Sue died after a brief illness on Thursday, January 26, 2023, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Douglas F. and Eleanor (Romney ) Cody.

A graduate of Netherwood School, Rothesay, and Edgehill School, Windsor, NS, Sue went on to Dalhousie University. An active tennis player and provincial champion in her youth, Sue was an avid tennis follower and fan for the rest of her life. She was a member of the Junior League, appearing in more than one fashion show as a clothing model; a volunteer for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind; Byrony House; IWK Health Center; and actively involved in politics throughout her life, in multiple roles. Sue spent 20 years living in Halifax before moving back to Rothesay in the '70s.

Sue was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, who worked the phones every day, maintaining an active social life to the very end.  But as much as Sue enjoyed touching base with family, her often daily and almost always humorous check-ins with the many close friends she had on speed dial were essential. She was a long-time member of Riverside Country Club, in addition to many tennis club memberships over the years.

She is survived by her daughter Alison MacKeen, New York, NY, and her husband Scott Shapiro, and their children Liza and Henry; her son Cameron MacKeen, Halifax, and his wife Shona Kinley MacKeen and their children Ewan and Kirstie. She is also survived by her niece Romney and nephew Thane Cody. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Dr. Thane Cody.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424). A celebration of her life will be held at Shadow Lawn Inn (3180 Rothesay Rd, Rothesay) on Saturday, July 29, 2023, beginning at 12:00 PM. If attending, please be sure to RVSP by calling Cameron MacKeen, (1-902-488-2867) or emailing CameronMacKeen@Yahoo.ca. Donations can be made to the SPCA, to honour her life-long love of pets, and to CNIB, where she had volunteered over the years and who helped her immensely in her final years.
