Obituary of Elizabeth Ellen MacKenzie

MacKenzie: Elizabeth Ellen “Betsy”

It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Elizabeth “Betsy” MacKenzie, age 99, of Saint John, New Brunswick, formerly of Athol, Nova Scotia, on Monday, February 13th, 2023. She was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, and was the eldest daughter of the late George E. and Thelma I. MacKenzie (nee MacDonald). She was a graduate of Highland View Hospital School of Nursing in 1948, later joining the Victorian Order of Nurses in 1950.

Betsy moved to Saint John in 1958 and remained with the VON until her retirement in 1983.

She was a devoted member of the Portland United Church, a Life Member of the U.C.W. (Jane Henderson Unit), a Life Member of the Saint John Regional Hospital Auxiliary, and a Life Member of both the New Brunswick and Canadian Association of Healthcare Auxiliaries.

Betsy was a long-time volunteer with Meals on Wheels and took time throughout her career to travel.

She was predeceased by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Catherine and Arnold Blenkhorn, and Jean and Ralph Smith of Athol, Nova Scotia.

She is survived by her many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. 

A heartfelt thanks to Odessa, Amanda, and the staff of Sea Street Manor, Saint John, the love and care shown to Betsy was so evident. 

A Memorial Service will be held at Portland United Church, 50 Newport Crescent, Saint John, on Thursday, February 23rd, 2023, at 2pm. A reception will follow. Interment to take place in Athol Cemetery at a later date.
