Harkins: William Thomas “Bill”

William Thomas “Bill” Harkins passed away peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Thursday, February 23^rd, 2023, in his 82^nd year. Born in Saint John on November 7^th, 1941, he was the son of the late William J. and Katherine E. Harkins (nee Kelly).

He is survived by his wife of 55 years JoAnn Harkins (nee Tracey), his daughter Tracey, his brothers-in-law Fr. John T. Tracey C.S.C. of Ontario and V. Gregory (Louise) Tracey of Florida, as well as many cousins.

Graduating from St. Malachy’s in 1959, Bill went on to pursue his Bachelor of Arts from St. Thomas University, and later his Bachelor of Education from UNB Fredericton. He taught at St. Peter’s Intermediate School for 32 years, until the time of its closure. He then taught at Princess Elizabeth School until his retirement.  Throughout his teaching career, Bill always tried to help those students who needed extra encouragement.  In his retirement, he enjoyed pursuing his many hobbies including golfing at Riverside Country Club, bowling, unearthing family history as a member of the New Brunswick Genealogical Society – Saint John Branch, as well as, collecting books, stamps and baseball cards. He and Joann also enjoyed many trips together.  He was a devoted member of St. Pius X Parish for over 40 years and served on the Funeral Team.

Bill will be remembered for his gentle and kind demeanor. He was a good son, husband and father and strived to be a good teacher.     In recent years, he may have forgotten many things, but never forgot to be kind.

Visitation will be held at Brenan’s Funeral Home (506-634-7424), 111 Paradise Row, on Sunday, February 26^th, 2023, from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm, where the Funeral Liturgy will be held on Monday afternoon at 2pm. Interment to follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery at a later date.
