Obituary of Ken Flavin

Surrounded by his loving family, Kenneth Edward Flavin, husband of Catherine “Mary” (Black) Flavin, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow, NS.

Born on October 1, 1951, in Guysborough, NS, he was a son of the late Leo and Hazel (Worth) Flavin. Dad courageously left home at age 15 determined to provide a better life for himself and future family. In parallel to working a very difficult manual labour job in Ontario, he completed his GED. At the age of 18 he moved back to the Maritimes to complete his carpentry in Saint John, NB. He soon after met the love his life, Mary Black. He called Saint John home for several years welcoming Mary and his two children (Jason and Jennifer) into the house he personally built. Always looking for a challenge, and wanting to provide further for his family, he became HVAC certified and began a career in refrigeration. This led Ken and his family to New Glasgow, NS,  where he worked in the engineering department at Sobeys Inc. for greater than 25 years (until retirement).

Ken enjoyed fishing, hockey, playing cards and cribbage. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. Ken was an avid Toronto Maple Leaf fan. He adored his grandchildren and enjoyed playing with them and watching them participate in their sports. Ken was a caring and gentle soul. He had an easy-going smile and could always lend an ear or a hand to anyone in need. Anyone that had the pleasure of meeting him loved him.

Ken is survived by his wife, Mary, his children; Jason Flavin (Tara McGrath) of Toronto, ON, and Jennifer McMullin (Ross) of Fredericton, NB, grandchildren; Liam Flavin, Kiera Flavin, Keegan McMullin, Lucas McMullin, and Gabe McMullin, sisters; Alice Smith of Saint John, NB, Shirley Fraser of New Minas, NS, Dorothy Ireland, of Woodstock, ON, Mary Bowman of Antigonish, NS, and Sheila Flavin of Antigonish, NS, as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Besides his parents, Ken is predeceased by his brothers; Bernie, Donnie, and Brian Flavin, sisters; Helen Boyle, Kay Ladoseur, and Eileen Garvie.
