Obituary of Dwight Allaby
Colby Dwight Allaby was born in Saint John, NB, on March 11th, 1947, and passed away on May 20th, 2023, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Dwight was the eldest son of the late Colby and Leona (nee Evans) Allaby.
Dwight attended UNBSJ (BA ’71) and UNB (LLB ’73). After his graduation in 1973, he was admitted to the Law Society of New Brunswick and he returned to Saint John where he continued to practice law for 50 years and raise his family.
Dwight’s love of the outdoors led to many adventures fishing and sailing on the waterways of New Brunswick. He enjoyed many summers camping with his family at Kouchibouguac, passing on his love of the outdoors to all his children. His love of the water led him to become a lifetime member of the Renforth Boat Club. Dwight was also committed to giving back to the city he called home and was a long-serving chair of the Saint John Parking Commission, and an active member of the Saint John Y Service Club for over four decades. He volunteered with the Alzheimer Society of Saint John sharing his knowledge of estate planning and elder law. In his later years, Dwight was a strong advocate for disability awareness and accessible spaces.
Dwight is survived by his children Sarah (Michael) Munro of Moncton, NB, Matthew (Erin) Allaby of Stratford, PEI, Norah (Shaun) Denis of Saint John, NB, and their mother Meredith (nee Crowe) Naylor; brothers Dr. Leslie and David Allaby; sister Dianne Thomas; grandchildren Colin, Duncan, Kate, Liam, Nina, Myla, and Estelle; and his partner Sandra Richard.
For those who wish, donations in Dwight’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saint John or the Canadian Cancer Society.
An informal reception for friends and family will be held on Saturday, June 10th, 2023, at the Renforth Boat Club, 149 James Renforth Drive, Rothesay, from 1 to 4 pm.
