Obituary of Velma Alice Moffitt

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Velma Alice Moffitt (Page) announces her passing from pneumonia on July 10, 2023, at the Saint John Regional Hospital at the age of 95. Velma is predeceased by her husband Eugene, her siblings John (Beryl) Page, Merriam (Joe) Gillis, and Alfred (Charlene) Page. Velma is survived by her children Deborah Ulmer, Amos (Hilda) Moffitt, Dale Moffitt, Patricia (Jeff) Ethridge, and Mabel (Mert) Cline, by her sister Elouise (Glendon) Caulfield, 10 grandchildren (Daniel, Victoria, Andrew, Ryan, Kyle, Selena, Alex, Samantha, Jenny, and Sarah), and 11 nieces and nephews.

Velma was born in 1927 in McAdam, NB in the heyday of the railway. She started working at the lunch counter at the McAdam Station as a teenager and married her high school sweetheart, Eugene, in 1946. Velma was a lifelong hard worker, raising 5 children and working full-time, whether at the railway, owning and operating a farm with Eugene, working at a diner, or custodian at the schools in Harvey. She and Eugene retired in 1989 and relocated to Ontario, then to Alberta, and back to Ontario before returning to NB. After Eugene's passing in 2001, she moved into a basement apartment with Jerry and Betty Piercy, who became dear friends. After hip replacement surgery in 2010 Velma relocated to Shannex, in Quispamsis to be closer to Mabel and her family - the other children having all moved away. Velma loved to regale anyone that would listen of her children in BC (Deborah), Philippines (Amos), Alberta (Dale), and South Carolina (Patti) and their families. She also thoroughly enjoyed when the family could gather, whether in Quispamsis, Alberta, or PEI. She spent her final years continuing to live independently at Loch Lomond Villa in Saint John, through the isolation of Covid and right up to the end when pneumonia took root in her lungs. Velma passed as she lived, a quietly strong woman.

The family would like to thank the staff of the ER and the palliative care doctors of the Saint John Regional Hospital and the staff of Integrity Home Health Services.

As per Velma's instructions, there will be no funeral or service. Arrangements are being made by Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis, NB (506-849-2119). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Society or to the Loch Lomond Villa Foundation.
