Obituary of Richard Bernard Arthurs

It is with an appreciation for a life well-lived that the family of Richard Bernard Arthurs of Summerville, loving husband of Gail (O’Brien) Arthurs, announce his passing which occurred on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at his home with his family by his side.  Born on July 25, 1944 in Saint John, he was the son of the late Violet “Dickie” (Puddington) and Clement Barry.

Richard took great comfort in surrounding himself in the beauty of nature.  He was passionate about farming (adored his collection of horses), haying fields with his grandchildren, enjoyed gardening with special friends and his daughter and was famous for sharing his fresh produce with the entire community.  Richard lived his life having fun and always looked forward to “choir practice” with the boys.  His work ethic was second to none, a trait he passed along to his children.  He was affectionally known as the “Keeper of the Ice Road” and always took great pride in snow plowing for his clients.  Richard was involved in the trucking industry and owned and operated Arthurs’ Express and Riteway Delivery before moving into logging and working with his son the odd day here and there.  Richard enjoyed snowmobiling and in his earlier years, motorcycling and was a member of the Blue Knights and Golden Eagles motorcycle clubs.  Most of all, he loved creating memories and spending time with his precious loved ones who were his world.  He will be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

In addition to his wife of 56 years, Gail, Richard will forever be lovingly remembered by his children, Jason Arthurs (Sheri), Jodi McCormack (Aiden) and Justin Arthurs (Kim); sisters, Virginia Robb and Gale McCurdy (Dave); grandchildren, Tristan, Colton (Emily), Tiffany (Evan), Declan, Quinlan, Mitchell (Donna) and Alli; nieces and nephews, Kim Rumson, Rhonda Rumson, Kyle Rumson, Jennifer Langelaan, Jillian Pelkey, Erin McCurdy and David McCurdy; as well as many dear friends.

A Celebration of Richard’s Life will take place on Saturday, March 16, 2024 from 2:00 - 5:00 PM at St. Bridget’s Community Hall (1784 Route 845, Chapel Grove).  Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424).

For those who wish, remembrances may be made to Romero House or to the Kingston Food & Clothing Bank (formerly known as “Deacon’s Cupboard”).
