Obituary of Nancy Evelyn Floyd

Nancy Floyd of Saint John, passed away peacefully at St. John and St. Stephen Nursing Home at the age of 97 on March 30, 2024.  Nancy was the wife of the late Harold Floyd, who predeceased her in 2006.  Born in Oak Bay on September 8, 1926, Nancy was the last surviving child of Harold and Margaret (Davies) Bradford.  She was predeceased by her three brothers: Donald, Richard and Norman and her three sisters: Kathleen, Marjorie and Helen.

Nancy grew up in Oak Bay.  She was raised by her father after her mother passed away when she was three.  Nancy’s love of music began as a young girl and she has played the mouth organ most of her life.  Her father was an accomplished accordion player and musician who could play a tune on any instrument he picked up.  There was always music and singing in the kitchen.  This love of music followed her throughout her life.

Growing up, she worked at the Milltown Cotton Mill and Ganong’s in St. Stephen during the war and moved to Fredericton where she met Harold.  They shared a lifelong love story and set an example for all of what marriage should look like.  They started their family in Saint John where Harold built the house of their dreams close to her favourite beach, Bay Shore Beach and Partridge Island.  Nancy was so proud of their home and stayed there until she was 95.

A lifelong learner, Nancy was a loving mother, a faithful friend, and a teacher of all things useful. Her talents included quilting, knitting, crocheting, cooking, music and more. Nancy was always willing to teach others these skills.  Growing up with Nancy, she always had time to go swimming, pick berries, or finish sewing a last-minute dress for a dance.  She was passionate about bowling, winning many awards and records.  A competitive and fierce cribbage player, she continued to beat us all at cribbage until her final days.

Nancy loved an adventure.  She spent her summers at McDonald’s Point on the Washademoak with Harold and family.  They travelled North America and a special trip that Nancy fondly remembered was heading to England where she met her mother’s relatives.

Volunteering in her community, Nancy was deeply involved with her church where she served in various capacities for the mission society.  She contributed regularly to the weekly soup kitchen and was part of the choir for many years.  Nancy also volunteered for hand-quilting with the Hospital Auxiliary.

She was the glue that kept her family close.  Nothing made her happier than having all the family together enjoying a good meal.  She is survived by her five children: Marcia (Carl) Sherwood in Rothesay, Vicki (Campbell) McBurney in Ottawa, Doug (Ellen) Floyd in Saint John, Peter (Bev) Floyd in Quispamsis and Stephen Floyd in Ottawa, as well as 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will take place on Friday, April 5, 2024 from 12:00 - 2:00 PM with the funeral service immediately beginning at 2:00 PM all from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424).  For those unable to attend, the service will be livestreamed and can be viewed by visiting Nancy's obituary on the Brenan's website.
