Obituary of Anne Marie McCaig

  It is with mournful sorrow that the family of Anne McCaig announces her passing. Anne passed at the age of 72 in the warm embrace of her daughter while in hospice at 6:00 P.M. on April 19th, 2024. She strongly fought a long and courageous battle against cancer with the support of her family. Anne passed peacefully; with angels taking her by the hand, leading her from her daughter’s arms, and taking her home to Heaven. Anne was born June 29th, 1951, in Saint John New Brunswick to the late John Joseph “Big John” and Marian Francis (McManus) McCaig.

   As a woman of immense piety, faith and loyalty are the only two words fit to describe Anne’s life. She took matters of faith seriously and was unwavering in her commitment to the Lord. As a devout Catholic, Anne made it her life’s work to help those in need. This was demonstrated by her lifelong employment with Horizon Health, serving dutifully in both Centre Care and Saint Joseph’s Hospital. She worked steadily to improve the lives of others with care, love, and devotion. She lived selflessly to ensure that the ones she loved were taken care of.

   Self-expression and creativity were brought to life through Anne’s artwork. She was a passionate artist who spent years of meticulous crafting to create a unique and beloved art style. Her love of painting has been shared and observed by many across the country. Her artistic legacy will continue to live on in the homes of her friends and family, who have always cherished her work. In addition to her skillful painting, Anne was a talented and award-winning stained-glass artisan and worked tirelessly to perfect the craft. The knowledge that she learned during her work with glass is continued by her grandson, who continues to make stained glass art in her style and vision.

     Nature was a great comfort throughout her life. Anne loved animals and the outdoors. The outdoors was a second home for her. She was an ATV enthusiast who loved the feeling of the wind in her face, and the places she could see. There is nowhere in Canada that she had not explored, having camped, canoed, and kayaked across the country from a young age. Anne’s love of animals was unparalleled, and she treated her pets with the utmost care. Whether it was an exotic pet like an alligator or a raccoon, or her beloved Beagle Dolly, they were always in good care while with Anne. Great pride was placed in her home in Central Greenwich, which was surrounded by the natural landscape that she loved so much. She put great effort into fostering a rich environment for wildlife in her yard, with ornate and well-maintained feeders for the birds, and a bountiful garden of beautiful flowers for the bees.        

   Anne played an important part in the lives of her immediate family. She is survived by her only living Uncle Dennis (Mary Denise) McManus, her only daughter Sarah Mitchell, and son in law Brian Schofield; brother John Joseph McCaig; grandson Brycen Schofield; and longtime good friends Terry Foster and Larry Tabor.

   Anne’s passing has been felt across the country, from the East Coast in Nova Scotia, Saint John, Boston, and New York, to the far North in the Yukon, to the West Coast in California and British Columbia. Heritage and family were important to her, and Anne was dearly loved by her entire family. She will be remembered dearly throughout her extended family by the McCaigs, McManus', McCutcheons, Lenihans, and Mitchells.

  The family would like to give a sincere and special thanks to all who have participated in her care and ensured that she lived comfortably. Particularly Dr. Whalen and Bev, Dr. Amy Groom, Dr. Daniel Scott, and to the staff at the Medicine Shoppe in Grand Bay-Westfield, and to Jason and the girls at Bobby’s Hospice who went above and beyond in her transition. The family would also like to thank Anne’s circle of sisters, who were especially important to her, and were considered some of her closest friends. Particularly, Sheila Kinney, Mary Foster, Cindy Osman, Rosalyn Flynn, and Connie McCutcheon.

   Additionally, a special thanks is owed to the rest of the Foster family, who all had a special place in Anne’s heart. 

  Arrangements are under the care and direction of Castle Fallsview Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John, NB E2M 2L3, 506-634-1701. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Spirit Parish (St. Matthew’s Worship Site) in Grand Bay-Westfield on Wednesday, April 24th at 12:00 PM. Interment will follow in St. Augustine’s Cemetery. Donations in Anne’s honor can be made out to Bobby’s Hospice.
